Biography
Born in 1987 in West Bengal, Shrimanti Saha completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in visual arts (painting) from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Saha’s practice spans drawing, painting, and animation, where expressive dreamscapes, literary narratives, and visceral characters converge to create dystopian worlds. Her work navigates the porous boundary between myth and reality, drawing from diverse sources such as film, literature, Indian miniature painting, mythology, architecture, news media, science fiction, comic books, and encyclopaedia illustrations. Her first solo exhibition, Reveries in the Atelier, was held at Vadehra Art Gallery in 2023. The same year, she presented a solo project, Alternate Evolutions, with the Foundation of Indian Contemporary Art at the India Art Fair. She has also participated in group exhibitions at Bikaner House (2023); Rizq Art Initiative (2023); Vadehra Art Gallery (2023, 2021, 2016–19); Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts (2021); Sculpture Park Jaipur (2018); Serendipity Arts Festival (2016); Mumbai Art Room (2015); and Alliance Française (2015), among others.Saha was a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2023. She has completed residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (2022); Vermont Studio Center (2019); Art Omi International Arts Center (2018); SKE Projects (2015); and Kalakriti Art Gallery (2015). She received the Amol Vadehra Art Grant from the Foundation of Indian Contemporary Art in 2019 and the Inlaks Foundation Fine Arts Award in 2015. In 2021, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art commissioned a painting by the artist for its permanent collection. Her work is also held in the Francis J. Greenburger Collection and the Motiwani Jadeja Foundation, along with significant private collections worldwide.The artist lives and works in Vadodara, India.
