Biography
Valay Shende is a prominent contemporary Indian sculptor and multimedia artist known for his innovative use of materials and socially conscious themes. Born in Nagpur in 1980, Shende received his Diploma in Art Teaching from Government Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur, in 1999, and later graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 2004. He completed an artist residency at the Open Air Program, Point Éphémère, Paris, in 2006. Shende's work addresses the complexities of contemporary urban society, often focusing on issues such as migration, economic disparity, and the everyday struggles of the common man. His art is characterized by its meticulous craftsmanship and innovative use of materials, including minute metal discs, pocket watches, and copper-plated fiberglass. Shende's recent sculptures are unique in both their process and scale, contributing to the unique process and scale of his work. His art has been exhibited widely in India and internationally, including prestigious venues such as the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum (Mumbai), Tate Modern (London), MAXXI (Rome), Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (France), and the Seattle Art Museum. Shende's work is part of numerous prestigious private collections and has been exhibited in Mumbai, India at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, in New Jersey, USA at the Zimmerli Art Museum, at the Chicago Cultural Center, in London, UK at the Tate Modern, and in Japan at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, among others.
