UNRULY BODIES: SIGHTING THE BODY POLITICS FROM THE AVTAR COLLECTION

Body Politic begins from a simple but urgent premise that bodies are shaped and regulated by power. The exhibition is anchored in the recognition that the body is where sovereignty is asserted and contested—where violence is enacted, where belonging is negotiated, and where histories of caste, labor, gender, occupation, and war are inscribed. In this present, such a framework cannot turn away from Palestine, where the scale and intensity of destruction force a reckoning with the limits of global accountability. When bodies are reduced beyond recognition, when even the material conditions of mourning are denied, the political order that permits such erasure reveals itself with stark clarity. The question of the body politic, then, is inseparable from the question of whose lives are protected, whose deaths are grievable, and whose annihilation is absorbed into the ordinary language of security and statecraft. The works assembled here trace three interrelated conditions: loss, disappearance, and autonomy. They approach the body as evidence—an archive bearing the marks of institutions that seek to discipline, extract, and erase—and attend equally to absence, where disappearance becomes a material reality through ruined homes, missing records, and silenced histories. Extending beyond the individual, the exhibition considers home as a political body shaped by displacement, memory, and ecological loss, while examining how citizenship itself migrates onto and into the body through documents, surveillance, and inscription. Yet this is not solely an account of injury. Alongside grief and erasure, the exhibition foregrounds practices of refusal: gestures of care, intimacy, ritual, and solidarity through which bodies reclaim dignity and autonomy. In bringing these threads together, Body Politic asks viewers to shift the question from what a body is to what political worlds produce it—and what it might take to imagine those worlds otherwise.
