About

William Blake called art “the tree of life.” Art grows from imagination, feeling, vision and spiritual experience. Like a living tree, it continually branches, transforms and creates new possibilities. It does more than describe life: it nourishes it, enlarges perception and allows inner experience to take form. For the artists of, ‘Masters in Madras,’ art is similarly a force that sustains and continually reshapes existence. What may begin as a passion becomes a way of living—a practice through which the artist understands the world and finds a place within it. Artists often inhabit a delicate tightrope between the physical realities of everyday life and the vast interior mindscape of memory, emotion, sensation and imagination. Their heightened sensitivity, distinctive temperaments and comfort with ambiguity may place them outside ordinary patterns of thought and behaviour. Whether understood as nonconformity, psychological divergence or traits that society sometimes names as disorder, these differences profoundly shape the artist’s personality and expression. Environment, circumstance and the experience of moving differently through society are absorbed and transformed through artistic practice. Art becomes the language through which the artist processes life, communicates feeling and creates meaning. It is precisely through these divergences—their unusual ways of seeing, feeling and responding—that exceptional artistic vision emerges. When these inner worlds are shared, they invite viewers to move beyond familiar ways of looking and to encounter life through perspectives different from their own. Each artwork becomes a meeting point between the artist’s experience and the viewer’s imagination, opening space for empathy, reflection and new possibilities of understanding. ‘Masters in Madras,’ celebrates artists who have allowed art to nurture their lives, and whose singular visions encourage us to see both the world and ourselves anew.
