Biography

Born in 1977 in Amritsar, Punjab, Astha Butail completed a master’s degree in economics from Panjab University; a master’s in the Rig Veda from the Gnostic Centre at the Auroville University of Human Unity; as well as a certificate in fashion design and clothing technology from the National Institute of Fashion Technology.Butail’s multi-media, research-based practice examines myths, philosophies, and traditions across cultures, traversing their histories and legacies through narratives of renewal and the sharing of knowledge. Butail has exhibited widely in India and internationally, including solo exhibitions at pied-à-terre Kewenig (2023) and Gujral Foundation (2019). Her group exhibitions include presentations at the PEAC Museum (2024); Kunst Meran Merano Arte (2024); the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (2023, 2022); the JSW Foundation (2023); Devi Art Foundation at the National Crafts Museum (2023); Ishara Art Foundation (2020); Columbia Museum of Art (2020); Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts (2020); and the Jerusalem Biennale for Contemporary Art (2019), among other participations. Her work is included in several institutional collections, including the PEAC Museum; Pizzuti Collection; the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art; and Ishara Art Foundation, as well as the Prabhakar Collection.The artist lives and works in Gurugram, India

Practice

Her works often explore memory as something collective, renewed and transmitted across generations. Threads, books and diagrams become vessels for philosophical and spiritual inquiry.
