Biography
Born in 1973 in Lahore, Pakistan, Faiza Butt trained at the National College of Arts and later obtained a master’s degree with distinction from the Slade School of Fine Art. She also received a teaching certificate from the Institute of Education.Butt’s practice, encompassing drawing, painting, and sculpture, addresses the dichotomy between contemporary culture and history. Drawing from a global range of cultural iconography and traditions, she infuses her works with biographical elements and psychological insights drawn from modern life. She has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at Vadehra Art Gallery (2024, 2012); Rossi & Rossi (2023) and London (2014); Grosvenor Gallery (2021); the Attenborough Arts Centre (2016); the Art Exchange (2015); Canvas Gallery (2014); and Thomas Erben Gallery (2012), among others. In 2021, a solo presentation of her paintings and sculptures was shown by Vadehra Art Gallery at Art Basel OVR: Portals. Her mid-career retrospective Paracosm opened at the New Art Exchange in April 2015, travelling to the University of Essex in November 2015, and later to the University of Leicester in October 2016. The specially commissioned installation Paracosm was also presented at the Alchemy Festival in May 2017.Butt has been invited to exhibit at the prestigious Venice Biennale on three occasions. Her exhibition Personal Structures was presented at the Palazzo Bembo during the 60th edition of the Biennale in 2024. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at Vadehra Art Gallery (2021); Grosvenor Gallery (2020); Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts (2020); New Art Exchange (2019); Aicon Gallery (2019); Free Word Centre (2016); Gujral Foundation (2015); Leila Heller Gallery (2014); SOAS University of London (2014); and the Contemporary Arts Center (2013), among others.Her work is held in major collections, including the British Museum; the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art; and the Burger Collection. Butt was awarded a UNESCO–Aschberg Bursary and was artist-in-residence at the Bartle Arts Trust in 1995. She was nominated for the Jameel Prize by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2011 and was a finalist for the Sovereign Art Prize in 2009.The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
