Biography
LN Tallur is an internationally acclaimed conceptual artist whose interdisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, installation, video, drawing, and digital technology. Known for his incisive critiques of capitalism, tradition, and belief systems, Tallur’s work weaves together the language of contemporary art with the materiality and iconography of Indian antiquity. He holds a BFA in Painting from the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore (1996), an MFA in Museology from M.S. University, Baroda (1998), and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art Practice from Leeds Metropolitan University, UK (2002). Trained across three distinct disciplines—studio art, museology, and contemporary practice—Tallur’s work occupies the tension between preservation and disruption. His approach often subverts museological authority and sacred aesthetics by inserting irony, absurdity, and technological play into traditional forms. In landmark works such as Chromatophobia (2010–2011), he addressed global economies and the fear of devalued currency through intricately carved coins and sacred forms. Wounded tools, coin relics, and symbolic machines recur throughout his oeuvre, turning everyday materials like cement, bronze, and LED screens into critiques of value, labor, and power. His Enlightenment Machine (Beta Version 3.0) (2011, 2019) satirises the pursuit of spiritual progress by reimagining religious devices through kinetic, robotic mechanisms, while recent AI-based works like DecisionTree (2022) reflect his engagement with algorithmic systems, governance, and predictive control. Tallur often draws from classical Indian aesthetics and ritualistic forms—creating dissonance between sacred materiality and contemporary anxieties. His sculptures are frequently encoded with contradictions: violence cloaked in reverence, satire nested in sculpture, belief embedded in decay.
