Biography

Born in 1973 in Kothanalloor, a village in southern Kerala, Gigi Scaria completed a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the College of Fine Arts Thiruvananthapuram and a master’s degree from Jamia Millia Islamia. Though trained as a painter, Scaria has developed a cross-media practice that includes photography, installation, sculpture, and video. His work engages with issues of urban development, particularly migration, economic growth, and urban architecture. He is deeply interested in the transformation of social space within rapidly changing cities and the psychological implications of these shifts. Scaria has participated in major curated exhibitions and biennales, including the Venice Biennale and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. His work has been shown at leading institutions such as the Smart Museum of Art; Mori Art Museum; Kunstverein Frankfurt; Ishara Art Foundation; Ian Potter Museum of Art; Kunsthaus Bern; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; the National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai; VideoSpace; Laumeier Sculpture Park; Jawahar Kala Kendra; and the Lalit Kala Akademi in Chennai and New Delhi. Scaria was a MacGeorge Fellow at the University of Melbourne in 2012 and received the Inlaks Foundation Scholarship in 2002.The artist lives and works in New Delhi, India
